He first gained attention in the early-to-mid 1990s as a member of the alt-country/honky-tonkabilly band The Carpetbaggers, which toured with Son Volt and shared stages with artists like Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, the Gear Daddies, Dick Dale, and Marvin Rainwater. They released two albums on the Twin Tone/Clean label, plus one final album on Hightone Records. After the band disbanded in 2009, Magnuson eventually released his debut solo album Barely Noticeable in 2020—a collection of indie-folk-rock with twangy edges exploring themes of love, loss, quiet observation, gin, and tonic. His 2024 follow-up, Waiting For The Water To Recede, further showcased his evolving craft, earning praise for its tight arrangements, clever lyrics, and hooks galore. Now comes Magnuson’s third solo effort: Denial, USA The title track serves as the album's opener and emotional centerpiece. It maps the stages of grief onto a winding road-trip across imagined American towns—Anger, Fear, Remorse—until the narrator arrives in Denial and ends up staying there forever. Other standout tracks include: • the bouncy cheatin’ song I’d Like To Think So, replete with lots of perky pickin’ • the infectious (in a good way) friendship-breakup song, Just Dumb Enough For Mine • the sad waltzy strings and odd melancholy of Gonna Get Going • the catchy, bitchy You Don’t Wanna Know Him Any Better Than You Already Do • the quiet desperation and despair of Another Pair Of Shoes • the chooglin’ bluesy twang of A Stranger’s Just A Friend I’ll Never Meet The other songs on the album aren’t too bad, either. The Denial, USA album was recorded and mixed in Paul McFarland’s (Lolo’s Ghost, Run Westy Run, Just Luv, Mere Kats) home studio. Paul plays bass on the album, plus some of the keyboards and guitar. He also sings the harmonies. And he engineered and produced the whole dern thing. It may as well be Denial, USA by Paul McFarland, for Pete’s sake! The great John Sandbo (Curtiss A and the Dark Click, Edie Rae Band) plays the drums on the album. The list of special-guest contributors is littered with names of highly esteemed Minnesota musicians: Adam Levy, Brian Tighe, Doug Otto, Dylan Hicks, Erik Brandt, Jeremy Szopinski, Margaret Hegg, Tom Schaefer. Their contributions are tasty and highly consequential. And also much appreciated. Denial, USA delivers yet another dose of Magnuson's understated Americana: thoughtful storytelling, melodic hooks, and lyrics that cut close to the bone.
